As the world battles the COVID-19 pandemic, are there any positive takeaways from the current situation? More than one, in fact. The fight against the coronavirus has not only strengthened our resolve to conquer it, it has also taught us the importance of being united. Even countries, which had been in splendid isolation as self-contained units, are now displaying a shared sense of global community. The realization has dawned that it is a global war against an insidious enemy.
These are indeed difficult times and the mounting death toll can easily inspire fear. The fact of millions of people facing lockdowns or being in self-isolation can be depressing, to say the least. But then we are also learning to treat it like some of our other battles such as the one against climate change which continues to be a threat but is finally being tackled. There have been any number of positive stories on this front across the world. This is what human resilience is all about.
COVID-19 has created in us the desire for togetherness. Currently, a spirit of global togetherness is sweeping the world with each country trying to help out the other. If the US and the UK have extended their helping hand to India, we have also reached out to others in need. It is this solidarity, the spirit of united action, that gives hope at this hour of crisis.
In our towns and cities, we keep coming across stories of Good Samaritans bringing succour to the virus-affected people in myriad ways every day. While some have been supplying them free oxygen cylinders, others are distributing home-made food packets. It shows that we are still in touch with our humane side and we will definitely seek out light at the end of the tunnel.
Amidst all the pain that we have had to endure, we must find comfort in these stories of hope and solidarity. Let us be confident that the current phase of gloom will be over sooner than later and that the future will be bright, as bright as the sunlight that emerges after a storm subsides and the weather clears. That there will be light in which one can see far because there is nothing to obscure the vision.
Right now, we may be suffering as many of us have been forced to stay away from our near and dear ones. But this is a temporary phase and let us fully realize that we have withdrawn from those loved ones only temporarily to be able to protect each other. This physical barrier between us will break the moment we overcome this crisis, which is bound to happen. Till then we need to be patient and draw inspiration from the stories of extraordinary courage and humane acts taking place around us. Let’s be sure that we will come out of this stronger and more united than ever. This crisis is actually an opportunity for the world to rediscover itself.
