Lewis Hamilton has been firmly on track to become the greatest Formula One racer of all time since quite a while ago, and this year looks like he is going to get there by achieving some rare feats. After the Briton broke the record of 92 career wins – held by German racing legend Michael Schumacher – with his 93rd victory in the Portuguese Grand Prix, people are curious to see whether Hamilton can win his seventh world championship this year.
Seeing the 35-year-old racer’s form and previous performances, his supporters had predicted that he will catch yet another Schumacher record this year. Hamilton made those predictions come true by maintaining his blazing form in the Turkish Grand Prix to notch up his seventh world championship on November 15 this year. Now, he has finally matched Schumacher’s greatest record.
Once the German’s record of 92 wins and seven world championships looked impossible to be equalled, much less surpassed. However, from early on in his career, Hamilton had been hailed by Schumacher himself as the most likely person to equal and possibly surpass his career best records. Thus by equalling the world championship record held by Schumacher, Hamilton paid a fitting tribute to the ailing racer by making his prediction come true.
The Briton dominated the Turkish Grand Prix by staying way ahead of his competitors, including Mercedes team mate Valterri Bottas who had the strongest chance to inch ahead of Hamilton if at all that were possible. Despite the challenges of the wet and slippery tracks of the Turkish Grand Prix, Hamilton kept competition far behind through his driving instinct and accuracy. He finished 31.6 seconds ahead of second-placed Sergio Perez to earn his pole position for his seventh world championship title.
He was congratulated by Perez and Sebastian Vettel, both podium finishers, as they witnessed history being made. The race went far beyond just being a competition among race car drivers; it became a celebration of the spirit of sportsmanship and perseverance
Although Hamilton was advised by the team to pit for fresh tyres following a comfortable lead, he chose otherwise, not wanting to rest until he finished on top.
As a true champion, the British racing ace did not get complacent at any stage of the race.
With this win and three more years to go in the racing circuit, Hamilton is all set to not only break the existing records of Schumacher but also create some of his own that will be difficult to surpass in the near future.
