Odisha Stares at Grim Covid Record: 8,681 New Cases, 14 Casualties

Odisha saw its highest ever daily Covid count, with 8,681 positive cases, over the past 24 hours.

Of the total new cases reported from across the state, as per data released by the state’s Information and Public Relations Department, 4,948 came from quarantine centres and the remaining 3,733 through local contact tracing.

The district of Khordha reported the highest numbers, with 1,408 cases, followed by Sundargarh at 745 and Cuttack at 570.

Fourteen people succumbed to the deadly virus during this period.

Koraput and Sundargarh saw the highest number of casualties, with three deaths each, followed by Khordha and Rayagada (two each), and Ganjam, Sambalpur, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi reporting the remaining four.

This is for the second time in the past three days that the state breached the 8,000 mark, with 8,386 cases registered on April 28.

With the latest figures, Odisha’s Covid-19 caseload – total cases since the outbreak of the pandemic last year – rose to 4,44,194, with 2,043 deaths and 3,80,400 recoveries, as per government data.
