A HEAD-ON APPROACH TO UNEMPLOYMENT

The 100-year-old problem of unemployment cannot be solved in 100 days. Thus said Prime Minister Narendra Modi while launching a mega recruitment drive at the much-talked-about Rozgar Mela (employment fair) recently.

A pragmatic leader with a vision for a better and stronger India, the Prime Minister was stating an undeniable fact.

However, implied in the statement was his determination to address this most burning issue of our time by creating more job opportunities for the country’s youth. The Rozgar Mela is just one such initiative of the Modi government aimed at generating jobs and self-employment opportunities for the youth of the country. The fair saw 75,000 candidates receiving their appointment letters.

There is no denying the gravity of the problem of unemployment which was aggravated during the Covid-19 crisis. A large number of people who were forced to migrate to their villages during the Covid lockdowns are yet to return and remain jobless. This has created a situation where surplus labour cannot be gainfully employed with wages commensurate to skills.

A survey noted that India’s yearly unemployment rate grew to 6.1 per cent during 2017-18. Unemployment, in fact, gripped the economy well before the pandemic struck in March 2020. The situation only worsened during the pandemic when the monthly unemployment rate rose alarmingly.

However, thanks to the efforts of Prime Minister Modi, things appear to be changing for the better now. The most important catalyst of this change is the PM’s flagship Make in India mission. Launched in 2014 when he took over the reins of the country for the first time, the mission aims at making India self-reliant by creating job opportunities in every sector of the economy. With the pace of Make in India mission having accelerated appreciably in the last five years, India is now a global hub in many sectors where it was earlier import-dependent. The country is on the threshold of breaking all export records, a testimony to the determined efforts of the government towards generating employment and making Indians self-dependent.

Ever since Make in India started bringing about a change in the country’s employment scenario and injected new life into the economy, the government under Narendra Modi has come up with several initiatives which support and supplement this mission. The Rozgar Mela is perhaps the most important of these initiatives and promises to fulfil the Prime Minister’s continuous commitment to providing job opportunities for the youth and ensuring the welfare of every citizen of the country. Acting under the express directions of the Prime Minister, all Ministries and Departments are working towards filling up existing vacancies against sanctioned posts in mission mode.

With PM Rozgar Mela 2022 opening the avenues for recruitment in around 38 ministries and departments under the Government of India, the future looks bright. There is new hope for the youth of the country.
